Grand Theft Auto VI changes how Jason and Lucia carry guns — and how Vice City reacts when those guns are visible. Rockstar North joint boss and development lead Rob Nelson put the rules on record in early September 2026: no more GTA 5-style shotgun-from-nowhere with a blank crowd; a fixed concealed handgun allotment; long guns that stay visible on the body; and NPC / police responses that track whether steel is on your back or in your hand.

This hub is labelled for the data desk. It does not invent weapon DPS, damage charts, ammo economies, or a full armoury list. Launch remains 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Status labels: Confirmed (Rob Nelson on record via named press — GamesRadar 6 Sep 2026; IBTimes UK 7 Sep 2026) · Press-reported / visible in official media (Extended Look behaviour noted by press; cite the official upload, not creator rehosts) · Unconfirmed.

Source note: Nelson’s quotes were published by GamesRadar+ and IBTimes UK. Creator preview chatter (including TGG topic coverage) may have carried the same interview wave — Vice Meta cites the press of record and Rockstar’s official Extended Look, never TGG footage as proof or rehost material.

Confirmed — Rob Nelson on carry + crowd reaction

Why GTA 5’s pocket arsenal breaks here

Nelson’s framing (GamesRadar / IBTimes): at GTA VI’s resolution and the behavioural sophistication Rockstar needs from the population, the old trick — magicking a shotgun out of nowhere in front of bystanders who shrug — does not work.

That is the design spine for everything below: if a long gun is on Jason or Lucia, the world can see it, and the crowd is allowed to care.

Always two concealed handguns

Confirmed. Nelson: you can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want. Handguns remain the quiet loadout for walking the city without advertising a raid.

Two long guns — back + hand, not double-slung

Confirmed. You can carry two long guns, and they stay visible:

  • one on the back
  • one in hand (Nelson: off-hand / held)

You cannot put both on the back. Rolling around like that draws reaction.

Back ≈ tolerated · hand → move away / escalate

Confirmed. Nelson: NPCs are more nuanced. A long gun on the back should generally be fine. Put one in your hand and people don’t like it — they react and start moving away. IBTimes’ write-up of the same on-record comments adds that police responses can become more serious in certain situations when you are openly holding.

Press-reported / visible — Extended Look walk-aways

GamesRadar notes that cautious walk-aways already show up briefly in Rockstar’s official showcase GTA VI: An Extended Look.

How we label it:

  • Visible in official EL = behaviour you can see in Rockstar’s own upload.
  • Press-reported = press describing that beat; not a Rockstar support article spelling out the full reaction tree.
  • We do not rehost Extended Look as our product, and we do not use TGG (or any creator) video as footage proof.

Pair with wanted system and criminal profile refresh: open steel is information the city can act on — same desk, different hub.
